Unfortunately due to my health and executive dysfunction issues, I will be putting this project on hold indefinitely.

If or when I do continue the project, it will be at a different place as well. My vision for this project has completely changed, and, like many other projects, the scope is far to great for me to consider prioritizing or continuing at this point.

AAA!

So... I'm getting a new healthcare provider.

After an unplanned hiatus--that hopefully won't continue-- I've been reworking the colors in the game to be more cohesive and fit better in their environment. At some point I realized that each of my files had wildly different aesthetics and that simply won't do. Off to fixing that I go!

In any case, I wanted to talk more about the setting of the game. In the last entry, I showed a bit, but I didn't offer much context, so here it is.

Aw Rats! Will take place in 13th century Germany and will feature one main location, the mysterious dungeon. It's dingy! It's slimy! It's dark! It is most certainly rat-infested! The dungeon is lit via torches, and features other lovely amenities such as sludge, mystery drips, and the occasional wrought iron fence and gate! Great for guests!

The game takes place during one unfortunate night where the main character wanders off... And it goes from there.

Slow Progression, Brainular Recession

The medication struggles continue, and thus, I have not worked on this project much.

Here's an initial sketch for the setting of Aw Rats!A dungeon with an arched opening and neon green sludge river passing through I imagine it to be a sort of sewer/dungeon with this blue mood to it. Mysterious radioactive green goop. Woop, woop.

Still Here... Despite the Inactivity

I am still not feeling up to par, my medication has been really giving me a hard time, I think the current combination is a lot better, but I suppose we shall see with subsequent updates. ;)

I made a pixel logo for the game a while back, I thought it would be cute to make it a rat shape, but I don't think it's working LOL Aw Rats pixel logo The text is way too thin and... I think it's a bit too goofy for the tone of the game.

I am currently in the pits of doing a rough outline of the game which involves a lot of research. Which I abhor. German history is not a strong point for me, especially being from the United States. Wish me strength, both in reading and attention.

Protagonist Concept Art

And here comes my second update.

Here was the first concept art of the protagonist. Quite a few details have changed since then.

Some notes I had for why this design wasn't working include as follows:

  • - too complicated

  • - shoes look weird

  • - legs are too long

  • - forehead too big

  • - head too big

  • - silhouette is ill-defined

  • - eyes too big

  • - eyes have a weird shape

  • - details are placed too evenly

  • - style is too cutesy

  • - not period accurate in the slightest

I am glad to say that in the character's current version, I consider these issues mostly fixed.

I think a big reason why the proportions ended up so awkward was because I was inspired by Alicemare's sprites. Miwashiba's art is beautiful, but I don't think I'm very skilled in imitating styles (even if only half-heartedly), so the new iteration looks a lot better.

As for my mood, I am feeling the worst I have in many years. This will likely affect my progress on work, unfotunately. Apologies.

A New Start

Today starts the beginning of a new project.

For this project, I will be creating an rpg maker style game in Godot. This will be my first official game, and I have decided to make it... well, poorly. I tend to overcomplicate things to the point of them becoming way too large of a task for me to complete them on my own, so to avoid that, I have decided that this game will simply not be good. Hope that's okay.

For this website, I will be keeping a development log of my progress. I hope to update once every two weeks or so, but I can't make any promises.
